I guess today is the perfect day to introduce you to the new Winter Writing Activities since it’s one of the coldest days here in South Mississippi at 21 degrees and snowing. Although Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog’s Day, President’s Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday have already passed, there’s still plenty of winter writing activities left to do. Let’s take a peek.
Writing in Kindergarten and First Grade
In 2020, I did an extensive blog post on how I began creating and using these activities for my grandson during Distance Learning and the writing process that I used with both him and my students. Winter Writing Activities
Coincidentally, as I was finishing up the Winter Writing Activities, my grandson Gunner’s school was quarantined due to Covid. Gunner spent the week of Groundhog’s Day here with me doing Distance Learning. His teacher assigned him a video on YouTube to watch to see if Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Afterward, we did the Groundhog’s Day writing activity. (Click the link above to see the writing process used.) We reviewed the words in the box, he added things to the picture and colored, we wrote our story together, and then he wrote his own story.
As you can see in the picture, his story is nothing like the story we wrote together, which is fine. Gunner is a great first grade writer. He already knew about indenting, although he didn’t know the word, and he forgot to do it when writing. He did use exclamation marks, spacing; spelled most words correctly, and used capitalization most of the time. He did forget to capitalize “Day” in Groundhog Day, which we talked about in our writing, but they may not have covered holidays yet in his class. And he put a space in “until”. Minor missteps. One of the most important things is he stayed on topic. It’s not perfect, but he’s off to a great start!
And let me add, these results are from a very stressful time during a global pandemic … missing a huge chunk of kindergarten and shortened days in first grade. Kudos to all teachers and students for getting through this pandemic with positive results!
